The Favela is a city within a city. Grown and developed simultaneously with that commonly recognize as formal city or planned city. Divides a variable as simple as substantial: compliance with the standards, or simply the law. The consequences are many and opposite effect: on one side we find the lack of services, infrastructure, plumbing and sewage networks, on the other favelas are urban landscapes rich in quality spatial and morphological, which establish a strong relationship with nature and the Brazilian landscape, inhabited by social groups whose ties are much closer and more sympathetic to those that occur in the city so-called regular. In other words, the lack of rules imposed from the favelas has led to a condition of unstable equilibrium in which everything is self: sometimes with dramatic results, while others, more and more frequent, through phenomena that could serve as an example for cities scheduled

The idea is that communities can retrain only through the direct involvement of its members, and that the external action is only effective if given by a genuine need and a clear call for help from the community itself

This project focuses on the Babylon and Chapéu Mangueira favelas, in the area of Leme in Rio de Janeiro. To read the morphological characteristics of social and economic change were compared with those portions of the Rio urbanized legally, in order to highlight the differences in the points of contact and possible suggestions for the future.
